Jill Briscoe gave an illustration years ago about prayer. She said we are like a little dinghy attached to a huge ocean liner by a rope. As we pull on that rope to pull the ship closer to us, the ship doesn't move. We are actually pulling ourselves to the ship. We are not getting God to align with our will. We are being aligned to His will.
